Life After Football: Why Athlete Transitions Matter More Than Ever

February 28, 2026 · By TJ Ward

The average NFL career lasts 3.3 years. That's it. You spend your entire life preparing for a dream, you get there, and then it's over before most people even hit their stride in a "normal" career. The transition out of football is one of the hardest things any athlete will face.

The Identity Crisis Nobody Talks About

The NFL Players Association has been pushing resources for retired players, but the reality is most guys aren't prepared for what comes after. Your identity has been "football player" since you were 8 years old. When that's gone, who are you?

According to research published by the National Institutes of Health, former professional athletes experience significantly higher rates of depression and anxiety in the first two years after retirement. That's not weakness — that's a systemic problem.

Financial Reality Check

ESPN and Sports Illustrated have both reported that roughly 78% of NFL players face financial stress within two years of retirement. The money comes fast and goes faster when you don't have the right people around you.

That's why on the Safety First Show, we have real conversations about money, business, and building something that lasts beyond the game. The NFL's Player Transition Program is a start, but players need mentors who've actually been through it.

Building the Next Chapter

I was blessed to play 9 seasons and win a Super Bowl. But the transition was still hard. That's why I started Safety First — to create a platform where athletes can share real stories, build real businesses, and connect with a community that gets it.

Organizations like the Players Trust and programs through NFL Alumni are doing important work. But the conversation needs to happen in public — on podcasts, on social media, in the culture. That's where real change happens.

"Football teaches you how to compete. Life after football teaches you who you really are."
